**Trust in love**: The black Mazda RX 7 in front of me stopped suddenly, and I had to hit my own brakes so hard the engine died. A boy jumped out of the car and came running over.
"I might have known", he said, looking disgusted. "A woman driver".
I stuck my head through the window and glared up at him. "I suppose it's okay for men drivers to slam on their brakes with no warning"!
"Take it easy", he said. "No harm done. Anyway, I was only kidding about the woman driver bit. Are you okay"?
He hadn't sounded as if he was teasing, but now that i could see him at eye level, it was impossible to stay angry. His dark hair was short and spiky above his soft brownish eyes, and his smile was wide and mischievous. I began to wish that I hadn't lost my temper. "Yeah", I said, finally smiling apologetically. "It just shook me up a little".
His smile widened irresistibly. "You're Vicki Kenyon, aren't you? I've seen you around at Greeley High. I'm Jeff Shafer".
He was one of the most popular boys at school. "I know". I said.
