**The search**: The need for well planned, structurally graded materials for the teaching of English as a foreign language has been widely recognized and the aim of this new series is to provide such materials for comprehension and composition work. The books have been graded into the same six stages as Longman Structural Readers and can be used successfully with any standard course for secondary school or adult students. Initially there will be two books at each level: one with fictional passages and one with factual passages.

As a result of the careful planning of the series it will be found that comprehension work can be introduced successfully at a very early stage in a course and passages have deliberately been kept short to enable them to be completed within the time - limits of an average lesson. Basically each book consists of two page units; on the left-hand page a passage of from 50 to 350 words depending on the stage, followed by short guided composition exercises, and on the right-hand page multiple choice questions. The first two multiple choice questions test comprehension of the meaning of the text and the others concentrate on structural words and lexical items. There is also a short exercise in sentence structure.

A teacher's book is in preparation which will contain a key to the exercises in the students books and notes on the most effective methods of presenting the material in the classroom.

Stage 4.
