In the room and a half now shared by Helen and Pete, the day bed had been made up for the night.
Pete, in pajamas, rummaged around in his largest suitcase. Helen, also in night clothes, was watching him unpack.
He indicated himself and her and the room in a single gesture. "Believe me, a thing like this could never happen in Milwaukee.
"It hast's happened here yet" she said.
She returned th the alcove and drew the curtain separating it from the main room. She took off her robe and stood for a moment in her fingertiplength nightgown, looking at the curtain.
In the other room Pete was looking at the curtain, too...
