**Sense and sensibility**: Elinor has sense and Marianne sensibility: their unfortunate love affairs form the plot of Sense and Sensibility, Elinor is in love with Edward Ferrars and eventually marries him, but not before he has entangled himself with the sly Lucy Steele, is disinherited, and then jilted by Lucy. Marianne is in love with John Willoughby, a heartless rascal. He leaves her and goes to London, whither she follows him, but she is heartbroken by his insolent conduct and eventually turns to the staid and respectable Colonel Brandon.
