**Interpretation and language exercises**: Book 3.

Preface:

This text-book has been designed to provide adequate material for exercises in interpretation and language for the lower forms of grammar and senior secondary schools.

The compiler has endeavoured to grade the interpretation and language exercises. Undoubtedly there will be diference of opinion concerning the correct order of priority, but the compiler has been guided in his choice by a practical consideration. Most of the interpretation exercises have already been tried out on the forms to which they have been assigned, and the divergence in marks between the top and bottom classes has always been satisfactory. The order of arrangement has been determined thereby.

Most of the extracts have been chosen from authors and authoresses of repute. Verse extracts have been included as well as prose.

The compiler, having regard for the number of Greek and Latin-derived words in the english language, has deemed it worth while to include as Appendix A the more useful Latin and Greek prefixes, roots and suffixes. This appendix, it is believed, will prove to be of value to the upper classes, especially to those pupils who study Latin. In the case of the lower classes, where the pupils are not taugt Latin, the teacher may decide either to teach within narrow limits or to ignore the appendix altogether.
