**Contextualized vocabulary test 1**: This is the first in a series of four books the purpose of which is to provide carefully graded tests of content vocabulary. Part i of the present book, which consists of pieces 1 to 16, covers content words within the author's 500 headword level; Part 2, which consists of pieces 17 to 35, covers content words within his 501 to 1000 headword level; and Books 2 to 4 of series take the student up progressively to his 1500, 2075 and 3275 headword levels.
Each piece in this book tests the thirty words geven at the beginning of it.
Each word has to be put into the case, number or tense needed by the situation; e.g. animal appears among the words at the top of Nº 1, but it has to be changed to animals in the second space in this piece. All words are tested in situations. Sometimes it is necessary to read on a little further to find the situation or context in which a word is used. (In Book i the vocabulary is mostly concrete, so most of the situations are given through pictures.) The whole of the work is therefore contextualized. It is very important that, after deciding which word to put in each space, the students should write out the whole story, so that they write the words in their contexts. The author's 1001-1500 headword vocabulary is given after the last piece. The vocabulary has been divided up as far as possible into registers, and each piece deals with one subject, as given below.
