**A direct method english course - Book I**: Preface to the revised edition:

This course has been in use in many parts of the world for some years. Comments from and discussions with teachers using these books have revealed certain shortcomings in practice, especially in those countries where only three or four hours weekly coul be devoted to a foreing language in school timetables. A new edition, embodying revisions that experience has shown to be desirable seemed to be needed. The revised course remains the same in method, the most important change being a redistribution of the structural points, partly to allow a smoother development of the basic patterns of the first few chapters, and partly to introduce two more tenses (Simple Past and Present Perfect) into this first book. Suitable dictation passages have been added to thee pupils' Books so that they can be used as extra reading practice before being dictated.
The revision has been carried out under the supervision of W. Stannard Allen and is largely based on experience of training teachers to use A Direct Method English Course. All concerned ar familiar with the author's methods and ideals, and hope that the changes that have been introduced will not be held to have disturbed his over - all plan.

There is a New Rapid Version which is an intensified version of the Standard Edition and the ground is covered in three books instead of five. The two versions have the first book in common and there are teachers' books available.
