Gabriel Chevallier was born in Lyon in 1895, where he has spent the major part of his life. He was educated there in the Lycée and École des Beaux Arts.
He served with the French Army in the First World War, being awarded the Croix de Guerre and made Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur. After returning from the war he earned his living at many diverse professions from artteacher to commercial traveller before devoting himself to his writing. He is married and has one son.
He has written a large number of novels, of which six have been translated into English and published in this country. These are Clochemerle, Sainte Colline, The Affairs of Flavie, Mascarade, Cherry, and Clochemerle-Babylon.
